What to Look for in a Digital Agency (And What to Avoid)

Not all agencies are built the same. Here's how to find one that actually delivers — and the red flags to watch for before signing anything.

Hiring a digital agency is a big decision. Whether you need a website, a marketing strategy, or custom software, the agency you choose will directly impact your results. And unfortunately, the industry is full of shops that overpromise and underdeliver.

Here’s what to look for — and what to run from.

Look for: transparent pricing

If an agency won’t give you a number until you sit through a “discovery call,” that’s a red flag. Good agencies can give you a ballpark based on your needs. Great ones give you flat-rate quotes with no surprises.

Hourly billing is another trap. It incentivizes the agency to take longer. Flat-rate pricing means they’re motivated to be efficient — and you know exactly what you’re paying before work begins.

Avoid: agencies that outsource everything

Some agencies are really just project managers. They take your money, hand the work off to freelancers overseas, and mark it up 3x. The result is inconsistent quality, slow communication, and no accountability.

Ask who’s actually doing the work. The best agencies have in-house teams — or at minimum, a tight-knit group of specialists who work together consistently.

Look for: a portfolio that matches your needs

An agency that’s great at enterprise SaaS might not be the best fit for your local business website. Look at their past work and ask yourself: do they build things like what I need?

Don’t just look at the designs either. Click through the sites. Are they fast? Do they work on mobile? Are the forms functional? The details matter.

Avoid: long-term contracts before any work is done

Some agencies want you to sign a 12-month retainer before they’ve built anything. That’s a commitment that benefits them, not you.

A good agency earns your ongoing business by delivering results. They don’t need to lock you in.

Look for: clear communication

How quickly do they respond to your inquiry? Do they explain things in plain English or hide behind jargon? The way an agency communicates during the sales process is usually the best you’ll ever get. If they’re slow or confusing now, it won’t get better once they have your money.

Look for: results-oriented thinking

A good agency doesn’t just make things look pretty — they make things that work. That means they should be asking about your business goals, your target audience, and what success looks like for you. If an agency jumps straight to mockups without understanding your business, they’re designing in the dark.

The quick checklist

Before you sign with any agency, make sure you can answer “yes” to these:

  • Do they show their pricing? At least a starting range.
  • Do they have relevant work examples? Not just pretty screenshots.
  • Is the team in-house? Or at least consistent and accountable.
  • Is communication fast and clear? Before and after signing.
  • Do they focus on results? Not just deliverables.

Finding the right agency takes a little research. But the difference between a good one and a bad one is the difference between a website that grows your business and one that just sits there.
